Applicant Tracking System (ATS)

Software employers use to collect, parse, sort, and rank resumes before a person reads them. Almost every mid-size and large employer uses one; most job seekers never interact with it directly.

An ATS extracts text and structured fields (name, job titles, dates, skills) from a resume file, then uses that parsed data for keyword search and recruiter sorting. A resume that looks fine to a human but is built in a way the parser can't read cleanly, columns, text boxes, or images being the usual culprits, can lose or scramble information before a recruiter ever sees it.

ATS Score

A single number meant to estimate how well a resume will survive ATS parsing and ranking. There's no universal formula, different tools score differently, so the same resume can get different numbers from different checkers.

ResuMakeAi's own score breaks this into four separate categories rather than one blended number: formatting and parseability, keyword relevance, quantified impact, and clarity. The first two predict whether a resume clears the automated filter; the second two predict whether a human reader is actually convinced once they get there.

Job Match Score

A percentage showing how closely a resume's skills and experience align with a specific job posting, as opposed to a generic ATS score that isn't tied to any one job.

This is a different measurement from an ATS score on purpose: a resume can be well-formatted and keyword-clean (a good ATS score) while still being a weak fit for a particular role (a low match score against that posting), or vice versa. ResuMakeAi calculates this by comparing a resume against real, currently open listings pulled live from job boards, not a static keyword list.

Resume Parsing

The process an ATS uses to convert a resume file (PDF or DOCX) into structured, searchable text and fields. Parsing happens before any scoring or keyword matching does.

Keyword Match

How many of the specific terms in a job posting, skills, tools, certifications, job titles, also appear in a resume. ATS software and recruiters both use this as an early, fast filter.

Matching keywords honestly (using the tools and terms actually on your resume) is different from keyword stuffing, listing terms just because they appear in the posting, without real experience behind them. The second one is easy for an experienced recruiter to catch in the interview.

Quantified Impact

Describing what a resume bullet accomplished with a real number, not just what the responsibility was. "Resolved an average of 35 tickets a week" is quantified impact; "handled customer tickets" is not.

Clearing an ATS filter and convincing a human reader are two different problems. Quantified impact is mainly what separates the two: resumes that get responses but never interview invites often score fine on keywords and formatting but weak on this specifically.

Chronological Resume

A resume that lists work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent job first), organized by employer and dates. The most common and most ATS-friendly format.

Functional Resume

A resume organized by skill category instead of by job and date, with work history condensed to a short list at the bottom. Rarely recommended: many ATS parsers and recruiters read the missing timeline as a red flag.

Hybrid (Combination) Resume

A resume that leads with a skills or qualifications summary, then still lists full reverse-chronological work history underneath. Combines a functional resume's up-front skills framing with a chronological resume's ATS-readable timeline.

Ghost Job

A live, publicly posted job listing that isn't actively being filled, sometimes left up for pipeline-building, internal-hire optics, or by accident after the role was already filled.

Cover Letter

A short, job-specific letter submitted alongside a resume, explaining why a candidate is a fit for that particular role rather than repeating the resume's content.
